A rare opportunity for some serious design fun designing for a serious fun company.

Branding, web design, web build

Brand and site design. Doodle Productions.

It's not all child’s play

Doodle Productions, creators of the hit animated children's educational TV show 'Messy goes to OKIDO' and the supporting monthly magazine 'OKIDO', wanted to broaden their scope of work and reach a wider audience. But with only an old repurposed logo and no web presence of their own, they got me onboard to help create a more polished identity and website.

Requirement

The client had already signed off on a handwritten logo design, but with that being a common logo route and liking the playfulness of the original logo, there was potential to add more character to their idea. So, with gentle persuasion, they let me refine.

It wasn’t long before a face appeared; the eyes calling back to the mismatched “oo”s from the original logo, and the stem of the “d”, with an extra flourish, making a perfect cheeky smile.

The face can also work as a standalone but recognisable element for minimal uses, such as an app tile or as part of a repeating textural element created for various brand needs.

An animated version of the wordmark, written onto the screen with blinking eyes, adds to the fun.

Branding

The website began as a simple one-page layout with minimal content.

With much of the imagery being child-focused, we went for a dark look and feel to avoid any confusion with the light and bright OKIDO site. However, the use of the brand elements, especially the repeating background pattern, prevents it from being too heavy.

Inevitable scope creeps appeared in the form of a in-situ blog posts, to avoid linking out to the OKIDO site and cannibalising user retention, and board member biographies.
